The FAST Method
Daniel Baker, Ph.D. & Jeffrey Sprague, Ph.D.
FAST is a quick and efficient method for reducing problem behaviors in the classroom. It allows you to quickly and effectively:
- focus on teaching, instead of taking instructional time to correct challenging behaviors
- decrease student problem behavior
- reduce your frustration and stress in the classroom
The program title is an acronum for the four steps of the FAST method:
- Find a verb to describe the student's problem behavior
- Assess your reaction to the behavior, andthe student's reaction to you
- Select the goal of the student's behavior
- Test a response appropriate to the goal
By following these four simple steps, you'll be able to make accurate on-the-spot assessments of students' challenging behavior and select appropriate responses that, in most cases, will reduce or eliminate the behavior.
